About Brussels Zaventem Airport
The Brussels Zaventem Airport is an international
airport in Brussels, Belgium. It is also known a the
Brussel Nationaal/Bruxelles-National (Brussels
National)) and is located at a 6.9 miles-distance
northeast of the capital-city, situated partially in
Zaventem and partially in the Diegem area of Machelen.
Brussels Zaventem Airport is proud to have been awarded
the Best Airport in Europe by the Airports Council
International/International Air Transport Association
(ACI/IATA) in 2005.
For a bit of insight into the history of BRU, you should
know that its origins date back to 1940 when the Germans
claimed 1,500 acres of agricultural fields to the east
of Brussels where they constructed 3 runways which are
still in use today.
After the liberation in 1944, the British took over the
airfield buildings in Melsbroek and added a new terminal
building by 1948, also increasing the length of two of
the runways.
In 1956 a new runway was added. It was during this year
that the Belgian government decided to build a new
airport, using the same runways.
Therefore, in 1957 the construction of the new terminal
began and the new airport was inaugurated on July 5th,
1958.
Many facilities were added since then and the airport’s
capacity in 2008 was about 18.5 million passengers. In
addition to the infrastructure improvements, there are
also numerous shops, restaurants, as well as beauty
